On behalf of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the WHO has published the Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-2023. The ultimate goal is a world where no child is at risk of paralysis caused by the polio virus. The Polio Eradication Program has already saved 18 million people from paralysis, but if you stop all efforts now, 200 thousand new cases of the disease per year will appear worldwide in just 10 years. Humanity is close to the point when it can let out a sigh of relief and proclaim to the world that the virus has been finally defeated and every child is now completely safe! But why has this still not taken place? The published document describes the minutiae and offers a detailed action plan that is based on many years of experience. Analysis of current challenges provides the basis for final eradication of the virus. Total eradication is possible by solving the following main tasks: stopping the spread of the wild polio virus and stopping outbreaks of circulating virus of vaccine origin. Thanks to the efforts of the GPEI, two types of wild polio virus have been successfully eradicated. For example, in 2015, eradication of the type-II virus was announced, and no cases of wild type-III polio infection have been reported since 2012. Maxim Stetsyuk, Executive Director of NANOLEK, commented on the published strategy: “We will achieve the complete elimination of local outbreaks of the virus, among other things, by using the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in place of a live vaccine. However, the problem we face today is the chronic shortage of IPV on the international market. In July this year, NANOLEK and the Chumakov Scientific Center signed an agreement to incorporate a small investment enterprise, where the first project will be the manufacture of a fully domestic IPV. The vaccine will be supplied for the National Vaccination Schedule of Russian Federation. The vaccine has significant export potential, with more than 20 million doses by 2025, and it will be delivered to EAEU countries and other foreign markets under the auspices of cooperation with UNICEF and the WHO.” #NANOLEK #NANOLEKteam See the full text of the strategy in Russian here: http://polioeradication.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/russian-polio-endgame-strategy.pdf
